Understanding ISO/IEC 17025

ISO/IEC 17025 is the globally recognized standard for organizations that perform testing and calibration services. Developed by the International Organization for Standardization, this standard establishes the requirements laboratories must meet to demonstrate both technical competence and the ability to generate accurate, reliable results. While it shares similarities with ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 17025 goes a step further by focusing specifically on the technical expertise and operational controls required in testing and calibration environments.

The standard is structured around two core areas: management requirements and technical requirements. Management requirements address how a laboratory’s quality management system is organized, maintained, and continually improved, closely aligning with the principles found in ISO 9001. Technical requirements focus on the elements that directly impact the validity of testing and calibration results, including staff qualifications, controlled laboratory conditions, approved testing methods, equipment calibration and traceability, and proper documentation and reporting.

By adopting ISO/IEC 17025, laboratories establish a robust quality framework designed to ensure consistency, accuracy, and confidence in their results. Compliance with this standard not only improves internal processes but also serves as the foundation for formal laboratory accreditation, demonstrating credibility and trust to customers, regulators, and industry partners alike.

About A2LA – American Association for Laboratory Accreditation

To enable global recognition of laboratory accreditations, the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) developed a framework for evaluating accreditation bodies against a common international standard. This framework is based on ISO/IEC 17011, which defines the requirements accreditation bodies must meet to ensure consistency, impartiality, and technical credibility across borders.

To support this mutual recognition process, regional accreditation cooperatives were formed worldwide. These organizations coordinate accreditation activities within their respective regions and work together to maintain international alignment. Examples include European Accreditation (EA), Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC), Southern African Development Community Accreditation (SADCA), and the Inter-American Accreditation Cooperation (IAAC).

Within the United States, several accreditation bodies operate to support testing and calibration laboratories. Among the leading non-profit, independent organizations are A2LA and the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). A2LA, the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, is widely recognized for providing internationally respected accreditation and training services, particularly for calibration laboratories, helping them demonstrate technical competence and compliance with global standards.
