Surface and Contour – Mitutoyo Surface & Contour Systems
Explore Mitutoyo surface and contour measurement equipment for inspecting surface texture, profiles, and complex manufactured features.
Surface Roughness and Contour Measurement Equipment
Surface texture and contour both influence how a manufactured component performs. Roughness can affect friction, sealing, wear, coating adhesion and appearance, while contour measurement evaluates larger profile features such as radii, angles, steps, grooves and complex shapes. Mitutoyo offers equipment for both tasks, from portable surface roughness testers to higher-capability contour and combined measurement systems.
These systems support inspection of machined components, gears, threads, molds, precision grooves, sealing surfaces and other features that are difficult to evaluate with conventional precision measuring tools. The appropriate configuration depends on the feature being measured, the required parameters and the size and geometry of the workpiece.
Choosing a Surface or Contour Measurement System
Important selection factors include measurement range, resolution, detector or stylus access, workpiece size, expected throughput and whether the system will be used on the shop floor or in a controlled inspection area. Software and reporting requirements also matter when results must be documented, compared with tolerances or transferred into an existing quality process.
- Surface roughness systems evaluate texture and finish characteristics.
- Contour systems measure larger two-dimensional profiles and geometric features.
- Combined systems support both types of analysis on a shared platform.
- Portable and benchtop configurations address different inspection environments.
